That was my guess too looking at @42believer's videos showing the stage in the background. The camera angles of the "official" #theVIEevent videos were cunningly chosen to make the crowd look much larger.

From all the photos I saw, I still doubt there were more than at most 500 there, probably significantly less. If there's one thing I've learned about crowd estimates it's that almost everyone tends to overestimate.
