Because it is both a easier means and more effective means. Easier in that even an impulse can rapidly become an attempt with little or no planning. Effective in that firearm suicide attempts almost always result in death. The next common method is half as effective.

Of those who attempt suicide and survive, the overwhelming majority will not try again - reattempts ~5-15% range. So “means reduction” is a method of reducing suicide rate overall, and has been shown an effective strategy on country-wide scale.

Indeed. I strongly suspect that my brother-in-law, who committed suicide 12 years ago, might still be alive today if he hadn't had a handgun in the house at the time he killed himself. He was depressed and abused alcohol at the time.
