I've been coming around to this view. Ad hominem isn't always a fallacy; sometimes it's just convenient shorthand. Similarly, an appeal to authority isn't always a fallacy, either. It, too, can be useful shorthand. Appeal to false authority, however, is always a fallacy.https://twitter.com/jtlevy/status/1193195267761352710 …

The older I get, the more “that’s an ad hominem fallacy” gets replaced in my vocabulary by “life is short, information is scarce, and it’s a useful heuristic to believe that known liars are lying, known trolls are trolling, known untrustworthy people aren’t to be trusted.”

Just insult them while moving the argument along at the same time.

If someone tries trolling me, or hits me with lies, that automatically disqualifies them from receiving a civil, reasoned reply. If you aren't going to discuss matters in good faith, I see no reason to continue any discussion beyond "Go jump down a hole, Troll."

I think it's a temptation that should be avoided particularly if one wants to maintain their intellectual reputation. It's rare that insulting an individual is more of a shorthand than criticizing their claim.

Also, a common mistake is for people to think a mere insult is an ad hominem; no, calling someone an idiot is just an insult, calling someone an idiot and saying that is why their argument is false is an ad hominem. -Dr. Chris.

Recently I had a person insist her research was valid, and I should just accept it. And then attempted to refer to her unpublished resreach as establishing an authority. Shefinished up with the pipers playing as she use a 3rd fallacy, one true Scotsman. A trifecta of fallacies.

Yeah, people misunderstand this fallacy a lot. If someone’s argument depends on them trustworthy or competent (eg: they make some claim without evidence), then it’s not fallacious to consider if they’re trustworthy. It’s only fallacious when their argument doesn’t require trust

Isn't appeal to authority specifically used when the authority you're citing has nothing to do with the topic? Like if I were to say "vaccines are safe because Stephen Hawking said it is" Is an AtAuthority because, while he's an authority in physics, not so in medicine.

Lots of people seem unable to understand that pointing out an individual has multiple retractions and is funded by an anti-vaccine group and that you’re therefore disinclined to believe their latest publication isn’t fallacious ad hom...

Or, for example, someone shared this poster with me. I’m immediately curious as to who the authors are, who they cite (Brinth, Shoenfeld) and who exactly are ” Berlin Cures” and who has validated their assay... Is that ad hom?pic.twitter.com/jCKpmc7Cwb
