They were shown a video basically saying that placebos can reduce pain. If you tell patients/subjects that a placebo can work wonders, you are not telling them that they are receiving an inert intervention.

What is the point of prescribing a placebo when patient knows it's a placebo? How is that even a placebo?

I'm not surprised. It seems reasonable that if the patient actually *knows* what they're taking is useless they'll be less inclined to either convince themselves that they're feeling better or to ascribe any improvement to the placebo.
