Your comment "Alternative med feels like a landmine of product sales that may help or not" is valid, but that part of it is quite small. But it's what people (Propagandists?) focus on to attempt to discredit all of Integrative Medicine and its practitioners.

That is definitely a factor and point well taken. I’m a huge proponent of magnesium and float therapy and have gotten great benefit from it, yet often the usual tack is to take the goofiest thing (look up jade eggs) and use that as a way of vilifying anything “alternative.”

Now as for jade eggs- of which I learned way more I expected from
@DrJenGunter... I'm no prude and sex can be very therapeutic - I have zero problem with sex toys used by solo or consenting adults, but goop made up a pseudoscientific story to sell more eggs.#SelfInflictedWound2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

Alternative medicine is aimed at women who hence bear the burden of the harms. My issue was being dunked on without being tagged. And anyone who thinks I’m “just” the “anti goop doctor” hasn’t bothered to read my work so shouldn’t be commenting on it.

Also, how many people who have been dunking on me have had to call the FBI because of threats after pieces they have written and then because they know people are listening and need the info keep writing about the subject anyway? Right. And what I do is easy? Fuck. Right. Off.

I am big supporter Jen - I am not dunking on you deliberately, maybe this is meant for someone else - or maybe I over-stepped bounds by tagging you in on topic you know about and there are media people following the thread. Apologies - no more tags to bother you.

Tellingly, this whole kerfuffle erupted after the 10' dunking oncologist in question posted a dismissive Tweet about dunking on alt med on Twitter. Someone responded with a link by me. And then…https://twitter.com/gorskon/status/1189729901903056896?s=21 …

Go one Tweet above it, and what do you see? A Tweet that links to a post by me discussing the pseudoscience of Goop. https://twitter.com/vprasadmdmph/status/1188943269410922497?s=21 …1 reply 0 retweets 9 likes -

I get
@VPrasadMDMPH's point, though I don't approve of his subsequent behavior. A lot of people are hurt by medicine's "accepted" practices. People given chemo, made bankrupt by treatments that we as doctors endorsed. Vioxx and Avandia killed 200,000 people.6 replies 0 retweets 3 likes -
Especially if we adhere to "do no harm", we do have an obligation to clean our own house first, and address unscientific behaviors that do hurt our patients. That said, there is plenty of work to be done, and we can't ignore the sheer damage that anti-vaxxers and others do.

But cleaning our own house DOES involve taking on alt med. Alt med quackery is increasingly being brought into conventional medicine as part of "complementary and alternative medicine" and "integrative medicine.” It is, unfortunately, a growing "specialty.”
