Serious answer: I believe Dr Oz is quite relevant here. Mehmet C Oz went from highly accomplished cardiovascular researcher to a popular TV doctor - how did he fall so easily and quickly? Celebrity almost always crushes science. 35 studies in AHA alone: https://www.ahajournals.org/action/doSearch?ContribAuthorStored=Oz%2C+Mehmet+C …

Serious answer: this was not the right place to bring up Dr. Oz Answer 2: Dr. Oz is not perfect, but I think we have to figure out what's to be learned? Is he all wrong? On everything? Or is the fact he's making people think a bit differently uncomfortable for some?

"Movements need villains and heroes". Dr. Oz has become one of the villains for some movements. You can make your own choices as to who you think some of the players are for various movements.

And sometimes I can’t even figure out why certain people have been chosen as villains. Like what’s the deal with all the Food Babe hate? Is there an additional element there of her also being a woman of color?

She gets a lot of valid criticism for being full of it and also a lot of misogyny. I feel like like

Exactly. She promotes a lot of pseudoscientific and chemophobic nonsense, but she is also an attractive woman; so she gets a lot of misogyny too. Whenever I write about her, I try very hard to stick to criticizing the nonsense she peddles.

Thank you for acknowledging this. I have the same discomfort with the Gwyneth Paltrow/Goop hate. Okay, so jade eggs in your vajayjay is pretty goofy, but when I notice on YouTube most of the snark is from white men, obviously there’s some discomfort there.

Not saying Food Babe/Goop aren't recipients of vitriol from white men. But white men quacks get it too (which is OK with me when they are clearly gifters.) https://theoutline.com/post/1951/david-avocado-wolfe-is-the-biggest-asshole-in-the-multiverse …

Yes, but the vitriol to which women are subjected is qualitatively and quantitatively different from the vitriol to which men are subjected. We don't get the rape threats, the sexist taunts, etc.

I don't think it has a ton to do with her being attractive, either. People are sexist at ugly people 365 days a year.

Oh, I think it does because it makes it easier for misogynists to invoke sexist stereotypes.

Yes and for the supporters, her beauty & "success" also makes her a better "spokesperson" for the intervention. (Not always as obvious as "Be like Mike.") We adapted "never trust a fat doctor" to "never by a bike from a fat bike shop owner" it's a broad principle easy to corrupt
