To paraphrase @HHSkepDoc, what's good about functional medicine (emphasis on exercise, healthy diet, lifestyle) is not unique to functional medicine, and what's unique to functional medicine (the overtesting and quackery) is not good.

AUGH. Ok, my own bias here, but it's hard enough trying to get the non-hard-science factors counted into the issues of obesity & body weight regulation w/o pseudoscience crap. Plus, their "modifiable" factors are racist & classist AF.

Stanford Pain does this too. I have Fibromyalgia and depression, two frustrating and persistent issues that are only minimally managed with conventional care. To me, functional medicine for these is just a way for these providers to make a ton of money.

Indeed. As I like to say, functional medicine combines the "worst of both worlds": The overtesting of conventional medicine (on steroids!) plus the quackery of alternative medicine.

Frustrating to treat chronic illness with resistant patients wanting “cure.” I spend so much time trying to educate people on physiologic basis of disease. But, they believe diet, exercise, destressing, detoxification, meditation will cure. Often with dire consequences

Thanks for the link. Baffles me that self-reporting could be considered even remotely scientific. We lie to ourselves so easily. We hope to feel better, and want the practitioner to be happy with us, so we agree that there's been improvement. My story of chronic migraines.
