On the moral basis that patients are human beings who deserve the respect of their providers, that providers should have the humility to understand that the patient who presents to the ED once a week or every day has a life full of challenges that most of us could never imagine.

Respect is earned. The doctor-patient relationship is the foundation. This requires respect on both sides. “Deserving” something because someone is human is not a moral argument in itself.

Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. This would suggest indeed we are born with rights

Also: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Our Founding Fathers believed humans are born with rights.
