After all, in my case at least, as a surgeon I need a full month's (at least) notice because, outside of emergencies, my cancer center requires at least that much notice for me to cancel a clinic.

Yes, you are right, it’s not the way to invite professionals to any serious event. However, knowing Deepak personally for over 20 years I can assure you he has nothing to do with it. It’s the lack of professionalism of some; usually volunteers hired by his control freak assistant
