Yes and no. Vaccine hesitant parents are often really nice people, just scared by antivax misinformation. Hard core antivaxers, the "thought leaders" of the antivax movement, are almost without exception shitty people, entitled and dismissive of any public good.https://twitter.com/SOlsonMichel/status/1180220661995687936 …

Anti-vaxxers aren't shitty people, they're just scared. They're afraid and don't like what they don't understand. Education and empathy are tools we can use to empower people to make the responsible decision to get their children vaccinated.

This is why I'm always careful to distinguish between the vaccine hesitant and antivaxers. Vaccine hesitant parents can be reached with respect, empathy, and information. Antivaxers are beyond reaching and just need to be opposed.

I haven't resigned myself to believing they're unreachable. Perhaps that makes me too optimistic, but in my experience, people change. We can definitely help the hesitant by discrediting influential anti-vaxxers, and we can focus on that. But I choose not to write them off.

💯 agree with this sentiment. The cult of antivax folks live to spread disinformation and rail against facts. Unfortunately this is easily spread beyond the thread to individuals all over the globe

Anti-vaxxers rely on anecdotes while the science community relies on data and facts. We are in a moral dilemma. Yes, anecdotes help reach the people, but anecdotes are not data and we can't really drop to that level. We can use empathy and understanding though.

Meh. Meanwhile, their little Petrie dishes walk around, spreading disease. No thanks, quarantine all of them. Good grief, we are going backwards.

If your vaccines work why are you scared of some kids just between the hours of 9am and 3pm?

Or just listen to their doctors! Not all doctors are great, of course, but most of us have the ability to find a good one, and once you have that, why would you second-guess? That is just insane to me.
