        In New Zealand we get the usual suspects saying that New Zealand was settled by the Vikings before the Maori arrived. This means the Pakeha (Europeans) did not steal the land from the Maori but merely stole it back.

        True. However; they are the Maya, not the Mayans. Mayan is the language they (still) speak. Maya is the culture. Maya is both singular and plural. Mayan is singular.
