In 2012, a 19 month old boy named Ezekiel Stephan died of bacterial meningitis because his parents believe in quackery over medicine. They were convicted, but a new trial has now acquitted them in a truly horrific ruling. https://respectfulinsolence.com/2019/09/20/ezekiel-stephan-justice-is-denied/ …pic.twitter.com/y9JMZPg3P0

Unfortunately the courts nowadays tend to side with quackery at the expense of vulnerable children's lives. Here is a sad example of such an epic Australian court failure.https://frankvanderkooy.com/2019/01/14/trio-cleared-over-diabetic-boys-death-after-chinese-slapping-therapy/ …

IKR? It's not just the US that fetishizes "parental" rights über alles.

According to the CBC this morning, the judge "decided" that Ezekiel died from viral meningitis, not bacterial. I probably should read the judge's findings, but I can't bring myself to do it right now.

Basically, the judge believed the wild ass speculation of a doctor who is not a forensic pathologist (and isn't even licensed) over the findings of the coroner and a forensic pathologist. Ezekiel had pus on the brain, for cryin' out loud!

I guess it's up to Alberta now to consider an appeal. I'm doubting they will go through with that.

Even if one accepted that evidence, it doesn't seem to have any bearing on the issue they were charged with, which was failing to seek medical care when he was clearly very ill. Baffling verdict. Crown should appeal but I don't know if they will. Overworked as is.

I think "not calling until he had stopped breathing" would qualify.
