I agree. I realize that the singular they has basically become accepted as the preferred genderless singular pronoun of choice, but to my ears it still sounds awkward and grating whenever I hear it and use it. Maybe I'm just an old fart.https://twitter.com/TamarHaspel/status/1174048086215331841 …

Cos you’re probably hearing and reading it more now, in mainstream media. It felt a little strange to me, the first time I saw it, but now it feels normal. Anyway, it’s just polite to refer to people as they prefer.

If you think about it, we say lots of things every day just because they’re polite. Saying “bless you” when people sneeze. Adding “please” and “thank you” to perfectly understandable requests. Saying “excuse me” instead of “please move”. What’s one more little language thing?

I'm also of an age where I learned to not use it. Keep saying it out loud until it doesn't grate on you. Singular they is not going away. Alternatives have been introduced, but they're not sticking in the mainstream.
