I've never understood why anyone was impressed with Harris as an intellectual. I read "The End of Faith" when it came out and was...underwhelmed.https://twitter.com/mccormick_ted/status/1171614176516747264 …

No doubt this looks like a bigger deal online than it is, but the kind of public intellectualism this brand of opinionated-but-not-interested "debate" represents is atrocious. Sam Harris Has a Problem by Jonathan Rash https://medium.com/p/sam-harris-has-a-problem-ad5debba9d62 …

When it came out, it was a lot of people's first exposure to a defense of atheism. It was impressive compared to....nothing.

Yeah, but the last chapters, with the Islamophobia...Oy, even break then, only three years after 9/11, I cringed.

His book "The Moral Landscape" is a giant exercise in to try to break the is/ought fallacy, and fails miserably. He essentially seems to argue for science-based utilitarianism, without having done sufficient background research on the subject.

I don't understand what Harris is actually qualified to talk about. He has a background in philosophy and neuroscience, but in that book he doesn't get the philosophy, and the last time I heard him talk about neuro, he was presenting brain evolution that was dated in the 70's.

I don’t think there’s been a real public intellectual since Gore Vidal died. We have had a series of pop intellectuals, who inevitably reveal a shallowness of intellect, bigotry, misogyny etc., with any duration in the public eye. Most telling, they never say, “I don’t know.”

He can run circles around Christian apologists, but that's kind of a low bar.

I tried reading the Moral Landscape and gave up halfway. So many words to dress up utilitarianism, and give scientists a lot of unnecessary work determining the empirical "morality" of issues. It gave me a headache.

I used to be a fan. He is really good at disguising himself as an intellectual. Then he tried to debate Chomsky. I've never looked at him the same since.

W/respect, I think there's a baby/bathwater dismissal here. In gen SH is provicative & prepared, vs vacuous. I def-see the point(s) re: his defensiveness & inability 2 let go, but I think that's due 2 a genuine belief that he's misunderstood. Athiests face a headwind in 🇺🇸, no?
