By "the right way," he means doing it so that it doesn't affect his profits. 🤦‍♂️https://twitter.com/drdanchoi/status/1166398063298170880 …

Stop surprise billing!! But we need Congress to do it the RIGHT way. Don’t let insurance companies use this opportunity to increase their profits. I think that’s an unfair characterization @gorskon As I stated, surprise billing is a huge problem for our pts and we need to fix it. Two states tackled this issue in 2 completely different ways: CA and NY. Each resulted in completely different outcomes for pts and docs.

In CA: benchmarking championed by insurance companies, eliminated any opp for docs/hospital to negotiate.. Long standing contracts w docs cancelled. Has led to almost 50% increase in pt access to care complaints 2016-18 after passage of surprise bill law. And CA premiums have ⬆️

In NY: arbitration was adopted in opposition to insurance companies. Encourages insurers and docs to enter into contracts to ensure pts have choice of docs. Led to 34% drop in out of network billing. Few cases go to arbitration because motivated both parties to resolve disputes.

Also NY law has not increased costs and NY premiums rising more slowly than national average. Also there are concerns that benchmarking will make specialty coverage of rural EDs Esp challenging. And rural hospitals already operating on razor thin margins will close.

Medicare for all or building on the ACA to make it truly universal coverage would do fast more to save rural hospitals than allowing surprise billing.

Basically, when I see a dark money PAC like @drpatientunity flood my local airwaves with deceptive, emotive ads, I become VERY suspicious of the message, and I become very skeptical of those promoting the same message.

Nine times out of ten, when I investigate the issue further, I find that I was right (or mostly right) to be suspicious.
