What a horribly irresponsible article in @latimes! @Davidlaz is not a drug addict. He has a medical condition that requires medical treatment and does poorly when it's not treated. We don't call diabetics "insulin addicts," even though they can't stop their insulin.

It's a horrible message. Articles like this stigmatize depression and being on antidepressants. They could lead depressed people to try to kick their antidepressant "addiction" cold turkey, which could lead to their suicides.

Really,
@latimes. Stop. Just stop. Don't continue this series. It's irresponsible in the extreme, and it stigmatizes depression.Show this thread -
Thanks to other threads, I came across this excellent article on lifetime medication for psychiatric conditions. It helped me, as a "normal" person, understand better. https://www.thecut.com/2018/04/what-its-like-to-be-on-antidepressants-long-term.html …

The comparison with opioid addiction is ridiculous. As a pharmacist, I don’t see people constantly running out of any antidepressants because they were “lost or stolen”. We don’t bother to lock up the Prozac in a safe.

In all seriousness, this author conflates substances that have a physical withdrawal syndrome with those that are psychologically addictive/result in cravings.
