David Gorski, MD, PhD Retweeted Los Angeles Times

What a horribly irresponsible article in @latimes! @Davidlaz is not a drug addict. He has a medical condition that requires medical treatment and does poorly when it's not treated. We don't call diabetics "insulin addicts," even though they can't stop their insulin.🤦‍♂️https://twitter.com/latimes/status/1170059104297127938 …

Columnist @davidlaz has spent the last year and a half trying to get off antidepressants. “At first I felt a bit better. Now I feel worse...I've even started thinking about going back on antidepressants, maybe for the rest of my life,” he says. https://lat.ms/2lA1MMX

Even worse is the comparison with opioid addiction. It's just a manifestation of the stigma of mental illness. Being dependent on insulin or antihypertensives to ward off complications of one's disease is acceptable, but being dependent on antidepressants is "addiction."

It's a horrible message. Articles like this stigmatize depression and being on antidepressants. They could lead depressed people to try to kick their antidepressant "addiction" cold turkey, which could lead to their suicides.

Really, @latimes. Stop. Just stop. Don't continue this series. It's irresponsible in the extreme, and it stigmatizes depression.

Thanks to other threads, I came across this excellent article on lifetime medication for psychiatric conditions. It helped me, as a "normal" person, understand better. https://www.thecut.com/2018/04/what-its-like-to-be-on-antidepressants-long-term.html …

Thanks for the feedback. While the language might be a bit hyperbolic, the goal is to destigmatize the challenge of coming off a variety of prescription meds. For many people, hooked is hooked, full stop

From the headline alone, it appears that you are stigmatizing being on the meds in the first place (“drug addict” is not usually considered a positive thing). So you are trying to destigmatize the challenge of coming off a thing you wrongly stigmatize (ie being on meds)? Hmmm.

Stopping methadone for chronic pain was monumentally easier than tapering off antidepressants.

I don't even have terrible symptoms of whatever brain bs is going on and I still feel miles better on my meds than without. antidepressants are literally life-saving for many. how dare he.

This is why so many go off of meds suddenly. Some may survive others it may kill. Mental health isn’t a willpower issue. There is than enough research to support it being biological.

Yup. The whole idea of coming off antidepressants is based on the dangerously wrong idea that you can "will" yourself not to be depressed. Its an idea that all too often results in suicide attempts and death.
