I have 13 upcoming talks in the next several months. I am being undercompensated for all of them. Here’s why: -a shocking # of invitations (the vast majority) have NO MENTION of honorarium -the implication is they’re irrelevant to my decision to accept or not 1/2https://twitter.com/SharonneHayes/status/1164931882817085441 …

I don’t get paid for >90% of talks that i give, and i give a lot. Unless i am giving them for industry I wouldn’t expect to get paid, just flights/ accommodation covered. That is the norm in Europe, maybe different in US?

Interesting. Would love to hear from more people on this.

consider it a privilege 2b invited 2 give talk and be given the opportunity to see new places, experience new cultures. would never ask for ££, having been given the opportunity to talk infront of my peers/ esteem it brings. As long as flights/ accommodation covered i am happy.

Do you put a limit on how many of those you do?

In the US, academic talks (ie, grand rounds) typically come with an honorarium of between $1000 and $2500, in my experience. This comes with the expectation that you will do more than give a lecture. Often involves meeting with fellows to discuss research, case conference, etc.

Pretty in-line with my experience of these talks as well.

I've had the experience
@djc795 has had. If it's uni inviting you, would inquire whether there is a budget for the visit. Their reply can give you insight into how essential you are & by implication how to prioritize. You're busy, after all & have lots of demands on your time!1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes -

Me too. I've rarely been compensated for academic talks other than travel expenses. When I have been it is usually $1000.
