It is rather amazing, how 43 years ago, when "Welcome Back Kotter" premiered, there could be such a depiction of such a multicultural high school in Brooklyn that garnered a large audience. As silly as the sitcom was, it was ahead of its time in that.

We watched every week. I never recall it being overly controversial either. Ppl didn’t rail against it. I had the lunchbox. Certainly wouldn’t mind seeing it in reruns again.

I saw a few episodes from the first season not too long ago. (I forget where.) It's definitely very 1970s sitcom, with obnoxious laugh track, etc. There was a noticeable lack of female characters (from a 2019 perspective), and occasional sexism.

However, even 44 years later, with the 1970s production values, the sometimes jarring dialogue and occasional overreliance on stereotypes for humor, there was a definite sweetness and innocence at the core of the stories in most of the episodes I saw.

The whole message of the show was that, whatever their background and misbehavior (remember, Epstein was supposed to be the toughest kid in the school, voted "most likely to commit murder"), they were all human and deserved a chance at education to make a better life.

Exactly. Couldn’t have put it better myself.
