The whole message of the show was that, whatever their background and misbehavior (remember, Epstein was supposed to be the toughest kid in the school, voted "most likely to commit murder"), they were all human and deserved a chance at education to make a better life.

The 70s were an odd time also. Trying to portray the forward thinking of the late 60s without alienating the Archie Bunkers had to have been tough. And I think it did an excellent job with Gabe Kaplan as mediator between the diverse group
