If white people don’t call themselves European American, Why should black people call themselves African American? I say, we should all just be Americans. Am I right?

White people call themselves hyphenated Americans all the time: Irish-American, Italian-American, Polish- American, etc.🤦‍♂️

This is true. But, because of our country's history, I suspect many do not know where in the African continent their ancestors are from. Unless they're @HenryLouisGates . . .

This argument wasn’t interesting when my grandparents had it in the 1970s - why do you care what any group calls itself? You’re being cheated from above (billionaire tax cuts) not by this or that group.

People call themselves African-American because in many cases there was no country to be from when their ancestors were brought to the Americas. By the time they finally gained freedom, there were European colonies in Africa, but few countries with native African names.

I beg to differ, sir. I'm a "white" American. I have ancestors from Germany, Poland, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. I am from the United States of America and none of those. So how can I be a (insert ethnicity)-American of any kind? Right?

I've seen British-American and Welsh-American used. English-American sounds more like you are talking about linguists than ethnicity.
