Real talk: Neil deGrasse Tyson said it too NDT-ishly, but was substantively right that we pay too much attention to startling violence. It makes us easy to manipulate, in a way that fuels hysterical nationalism more often than not.

A surprising response, actually. Even playing NDT's style, 100+ people a day die from gun violence. Gun violence is a problem lacking will, not a brilliant or technologically distant solution. Therein lies the difference.

NDT was tone deaf as hell. Also, that bit about deaths from medical errors was too high by probably at least a factor of ten. I know 90K/yr is the IOM estimate, but there are so many problems with using a global trigger tool to estimate such deaths that the number is meaningless.
