I' like @neiltyson to issue a very clear and very public apology. I am confident his hero Carl Sagan would never have said anything so utterly misleading.
Scientists deal with facts. But facts, used without context, can be used to tell untruths. That's what he tweet did.

It’s not that facts are untruthful (though at least one the numbers was very wrong), but rather that facts don’t stand alone. There are subjective choices made about which facts to highlight, when and how, that greatly influence the inferred meaning.

Exactly. His use of the word "horrific" to describe the shooting notwithstanding, the whole thing comes across as telling people to chill out because compared to other causes of death mass shootings are insignificant. Tone-deaf as hell, particularly only 12 hours after Dayton.
