Is there any evidence to support this hypothesis, though? That's always been my first question when I hear this argument for not making mass shooters.https://twitter.com/radleybalko/status/1157785779302801409 …

The move toward not naming mass shooters has nothing to do with race. It's based on the theory that notoriety encourages more shooters -- that you're giving them exactly what they want. https://twitter.com/shaunking/status/1157763556479295490 …

The fact that news reporting about suicides increase suicide in the same geographical region and of the same type has been known since the 1970s (social proof model). https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0007252 … (refs 8-15)

Man the Werther effect has been around for 200 years. Prior to Evelyn McHales LIFE magazine photograph "the beautiful suicide" the empire state building averaged one suicide per 2 years. After the publication, one suicide per 4.8 days .

1000-2000 Americans died because of reporting of Robin Williams suicide. Approximately 80 because of 13 reasons why. The media is complicit in harming others by their sensationalization, continuous contravention of standards for suicide reporting, and by "bleeds it leads" style

Yes, but are these data transferable to not naming mass murderers?

the data is nigh impossible to collect (suicide association detection is hard enough and it's at 14 per 100k per year, being a mass murderer is orders of magnitude smaller), so we're going to have to rely on what we currently know. The direct question will be elusive.

Seeing as many mass murderers are doing so to advance a mission or notoriety or to send a "message" the scientific principle of "c'mon it's pretty plausible" should likely hold until disproven. Publishing names, manifestos, and messages, and describing their mission doesnt help.

I'm wondering about the practicality of it, though. In the age of social media, the name will get out there. The manifesto will also get out there. Moderators can try to take down posts with the name or the manifesto, but they'll never be able to keep up.

There are orders of magnitude difference in impact between national and local coverage and "it showed up on a social media site and then was taken down"

The name will likely get out, but the notoriety will be lower and the impact on the rest of the environment (the spread) will be lower

The evidence is probably not there for the specific act of naming, but the general idea of social contagion is probably reasonable. Not sure how to best apply it. Media should avoid giving make mass murderers so much attention that they become glorified martyrs for the movement.
