Holy hell, WTF, Neil? So, just because other things kill more people, we shouldn't be concerned about mass shooters? Because that is the message you are sending.https://twitter.com/neiltyson/status/1158074774297468928 …

In the past 48hrs, the USA horrifically lost 34 people to mass shootings. On average, across any 48hrs, we also lose… 500 to Medical errors 300 to the Flu 250 to Suicide 200 to Car Accidents 40 to Homicide via Handgun Often our emotions respond more to spectacle than to data.

At least you're not using the 250K-400K/yr estimates for medical errors, but rather the lower IOM estimate of around 90K, but even that's arguably way too high., and having that be the highest number is deceptive.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/are-medical-errors-really-the-third-most-common-cause-of-death-in-the-u-s-2019-edition/ …

I mean, around 610K die of cancer every year, which would be around 3,300/48 hrs. In any event, your comparison seems to be saying, "Don't worry, be happy."

Think of it this way: We're working hard to decrease and eliminate medical errors, the flu, suicide, and auto collisions. We're doing basically jack squat about gun deaths, be they homicides or mass homicides.

IDK, at least against flu, cancer, medical malpractice, I stand a chance of survival. Car accidents, I stand a chance of survival. Being sprayed by bullets in a public space while enjoying garlic ice cream, I stand zero chance of survival.

Today in: "takes no one needed." I do think it's important to think about all the gun violence that's just "a daily occurence" that seems to get a lot less news coverage than these terrorist attacks. But this is just a bad take.

Genuinely shocked by Neil’s response to this. Can’t see the logic in it at all. What a mess.

Yep. It sounds as though he was trying to be too clever in finding a way to put the death toll "in perspective" and ended up looking both callous and clueless.

I would hope his message is more that we need not be in an existential panic about this, not that we should do nothing.

I mean, the point of terrorism is to terrorize. My guess is, putting what Neil said in the best possible light, he wants to shield people against terror with rationality. There may be some merit to that, but at stated it just looks like he's trying to minimize the problem.
