I'm increasingly of the opinion that old people who become more hateful and bigoted from watching Fox News were always that way. They just hid it much better. Prolonged exposure to right wing media just made them feel comfortable more openly expressing their bigotry and racism.1/

I'll qualify that by adding that it's almost certainly true that exposure to right wing media over time takes that preexisting racism and bigotry and supercharges it by providing fuel and an echo chamber. 2/

People who aren't already bigoted and racist, however, are highly unlikely to become so because of prolonged exposure to right wing media. There has to be fertile soil for the seeds planted by Hannity, etc., to grow. 3/3

In fact, people who aren't already bigoted and racist aren't likely to willingly consume right wing media. They might bet forced to hear it at work or something, but they don't choose it. There is thus likely to be a large element of self-selection going on. 3a/3

Age narrows & reinforces your familiar mental pathways. If you expose yourself to continual negativity, then those paths will become deep ruts as you age - ruts you can't escape. To be happy in your old age, you must reinforce positive, hopeful, grateful thinking all life long.

In general, people can be persuaded/manipulated, and in general, it's easier to do that when the thing you're trying to get them to do is something they'd wanted to do in the first place. But people have inconsistent wants, e.g. to be fair and to protect your in-group.

So Fox News can transform people from being kinda racist but trying to be better into plain racist. And, honestly, I think most people are kinda racist and trying to be better. It's just a matter of how much effort you put in.

For many reasons as we get older our social networks become increasingly narrow, & this accelerates after stopping work. In the absence of alterative views our own biases will be confirmed over & over, thus fixing them in place. This will be true at either end. 1/2

& despite what Right wing media claim, the main media provides a spectrum whereas Fox & related only provide one view

Absolutely. They had previously “toned it down” in response to most people’s reactions. But if the PRESIDENT is saying exactly what they’ve always believed, then it MUST be OK to say it, right?
