ODST is run by the Anglican church, which propagates a weakened strain of the virus. If this couple win their case, I hope it will serve as a precedent for campaigns to protect children from more virulent plagues such as Islam and Roman Catholicism.https://bit.ly/2GAxMb7

“Don't call people's beliefs a virus, that's like calling people cockroaches. Very offensive and unnecessary” Ok then, “Don’t call cancer a disease. Very offensive to cancer sufferers”? Children indoctrinated with religion are the main sufferers from the mind virus of faith.

I don't know if it is offensive or not. But religions are not viruses. Call them superstitions, call them erroneous beliefs. You cheapen the atheist movement that you have contributed so much to with this kind of nonsense.

The English language uses metaphors constantly in everyday speech, so ‘virus’ is perfectly appropriate in this instance because it describes how religious beliefs are transferred exactly.

Being a professional songwriter I know a thing or two about metaphors, and they have their place. I love Dawkins I just don't mindlessly defend him like you.

Far from mindless defense of Prof Dawkins, I’m a biologist myself and I considered his use of said metaphor highly appropriate in this instance, and would struggle to find a better one. It allows non scientists to grasp the concept more clearly.

What about his comparison of his virus metaphor to calling cancer a disease being offensive to cancer patients? I'm a cancer surgeon, and I found Riau analogy to be painfully and stupidly inapt.

I’m still staring at it wondering what it means. If it’s not a disease, what else is it? And how should I be offended that I have a diseases? Better that than “your genetics suck”

IKR? Dawkins needs to learn the difference between metaphor/analogy and accepted medical terminology. Cancers are diseases by definition.

I didn't even try to make sense of that. Dawkins is a very bright person but we all say stupid things from time to time. I guess having an army of followers treating every word you say as gospel takes a toll on your ego and your judgment.

The problem is that he's been doing it so often for so long.

When you have an army of minions ready to insult anyone that calls out your mistakes you don't have to defend your views anymore and hubris takes over. Keep fighting the good fight doctor!
