The fact that no one was harmed was probably one reason why Peter got off so easily. Really, it's no big deal to take the human subjects research training. I do it every few years, and grumble about it, like most academic physicians.

Most IRBs even have a fast-track process for determining whether research falls under one of the specified categories of exempt research. In most cases, the chair of the IRB can make the determination.

All fair/accurate points. I'm hearing you both. I still wonder what we could do if the IRB has become corrupt. Ideological biases are everywhere. I'm not typically an alarmist. It just seems like many facets of academia are becoming corrupt. Could be wrong, happy to be wrong.

It is not corrupt, it is a pain in the ass because it is so averse to corruption. We dread it, like the IRS or a colonoscopy, but it is necessary.
