The people with ME who critique academics, are generally not criticising science but the abuse of science. The academics are not defending science but their poor quality research. The issue is the abuse of power.

At the same time, there are many non-academics who make valid points and expose bad research. And there are many prominent academics who use isolated ad hominem attacks as an excuse to claim victimhood and thereby justify poor research. Good behaviour is always a two-way street.
