So, two points. 1. Of course I have read them. Neither offers a more valid or reliable estimate 2. The existence of an undesirable outcome doesn't at all imply that the studies are invalid or unreliable. (See "Appeal to Consequences")

No, the studies' METHODOLOGY virtually guarantees that their conclusions are invalid and/or unreliable, as was explained in the posts.

But insufficient to be retracted. Once more, let me say this clearly and unambiguously - The ONLY way we rid ourselves of this pall, is to provide a superseding estimate with better validity and reliability. No amount of sideline kvetching will change that fact . However /2

Even when we get a better estimate it STILL will not be good news. There is nothing on the table that suggests that a perfect estimate will show quality and safety to be optimal. Every indicator suggests that errors are pervasive and frequently deadly

Of course it won't be good news. Patients dying due to doctor error will never be good news. But that it is bad is no excuse to make it worse than it seems. Don't frame it as a crisis when it is a pressing problem.

Mate, if it is over 6,210 per million opportunities, it's a bloody crisis, and no matter whose estimate you take, we are WAY beyond the crisis level. If you think we don't have a crisis with medical errors, perhaps you aren't paying attention.

That's an interesting point. For some cases, it certainly is true that the error was bigger than the illness. For example, if you went in for a hernia repair and came out dead from a drug mix-up

I understand your concern, but this isn't telling the public care is worse than illness Many drugs are indeed more harmful than the conditions they treat, ditto many surgeries that have negligible benefits vs significant risks. Hiding that doesn't help anyone.

Actually, though, that's EXACTLY the message patients get when it's credulously reported in the press that medical errors account for one-third of deaths.

The press reports wonder drugs, advertises supplements, and extolls the value of magnets in one's shoes too. Doesn't mean we should not use the results of a peer-reviewed paper to provide a temporary estimate of medical error It does mean we should put effort into improving it
