I find it useful to ask people, Have you ever changed your mind on one of the Big Issues? A friend became anti capital punishment after witnessing an execution. I moved to atheism on my own. That's how it works.

I was once a conservative. Although I never joined the GOP, I basically always voted Republican and supported Republican policies. The 1990s and then finally the invasion of Iraq flipped me, but it was a decade-long process.

Change like that doesn't happen in a day and it certainly doesn't happen after a debate. It's a process, usually with a "last straw" or a St. Paul on the road to Damascus moment that finally flips you. The groundwork for that moment has to be laid first.
