David Gorski, MD, PhD Retweeted Michael Shermer

Considering that the far right perpetrates way more violence than the far left (it isn't even close), Shermer's asymmetry in criticizing left wing violence perpetuates a narrative of false equivalence that portrays left wing violence as far more of a problem than it really is.https://twitter.com/michaelshermer/status/1147154472201670657 …

The reason it seems many of us hammer the Far-Left more than the Far-Right is that we EXPECT White Supremacists et al. to act like violent thugs. Liberalism is suppose to be cerebral, making the case with good arguments, not angry fists. Conclusion: the Far-Left ≠ Liberalism.

The false equivalence that Shermer is promoting is that the far left and right are equally prone to violence. That is demonstrably false. Again, it's not even close and hasn't been for decades.

Of course, on the right, this false narrative is an intentional tactic designed to downplay how violent the fascists who support Trump are. It's sad to see Shermer exhibit so little skepticism toward this propaganda technique and help these propagandists spread their message.

The same is true of the "Nazis were socialists" meme that Shermer fell for and was forced to admit wasn't accurate. It's revisionist history used as propaganda The idea is to falsely and deceptively portray fascist violence as left wing. It saddened me to see Shermer fall for it.

I know everyone has blind spots, myself included. Skeptics should try very hard to identify theirs and eliminate the ones they can, realizing it's impossible to eliminate them all. I try, and I'm sure I must fail sometimes.

What saddens me is to see Shermer's blind spot caused by his distaste for certain elements of the left get bigger and his apparent desire to address that blind spot get smaller. When it comes to elements of the left he dislikes, it's motivated reasoning all the way.

Now just swap out the word "violence" with "stupidity": "Liberals are supposed to be cerebral" so we expect them to have brilliant ideas but when trump says something stupid, well "the far [right] perpetrates way more stupidity than the far left (it isn't even close)."

It also fails to acknowledge a necessary task of fascists to gain and hold power is to create undue fear of those who resist them. I was only partially joking about the “Reichstag Milkshake”. 100% of the deaths from political violence for the last 3 years have been right wing.

In order to protect rightwing violence, and justify it against resistance, they have to create fear of the resistance. They have to make people believe the resistance is causing social strife and violence, that the resistance is the cause of the unrest. Hence Milkshakes=murder.
