Basically, whatever sham acupuncture you choose, either sticking needles in "non-acupuncture" points or using sham retractable needles, the answer is the same: "True acupuncture" is no different from "sham acupuncture."

Of course, if the FDA were to approve a drug or treatment that didn't do better than placebo, acupuncture advocates would be outraged—and rightly so. Yet they advocate for a treatment that's never convincingly been shown to be better than placebo for anything.
