Irritation of the day: Due to my recent surgery and medical leave happening at the same time as my favorite meetings, most of which are in the spring and the next meeting not until FY2020, I found I had some money left in my academic fund. That's not the irritation. This is. 1/

I thought, "What the heck? Maybe they'll let me order a new desktop computer." I didn't know if the funds could be used for that. (Normally the fund is for meetings, textbooks, publishing page charges, etc.) So I asked. 2/

The response was: Yes, you can order a new computer, but we only buy from Dell. WTF? I'm a Mac user. I've been a Mac user since the 1980s. I only ever buy Windows machines if they're what is needed to run a piece of lab equipment. I'd never buy one as my primary work axe. 3/

I felt the same way when my boss would only let us buy Macs. Which also meant it cost more for less equipment.

In this day and age, most applications are platform-independent. We should be able to use the OS we want. As far as the Mac goes, it runs Windows too, either through Bootcamp or am emulator.

Screw them. Tell them, sure they can place the order with Dell, but you want an iMac Pro Retina.

I'm serious. Yes, their job is to follow rules, but rules have exceptions for a reason. See if 1-2-more software packages you depend upon heavily for your research only work on the Mac OS. Write it up as a justification. If a rule impedes core mission, you should get a waiver.

If you just prefer OSX and can't get a Mac at work; I'd recommend at least trying Linux. They're pretty similar to for the most part minus dealing with Linux's occasional horseshit. Plus once you learn terminal, it's very easy to work with.

Can you buy a mac and just put a Dell sticker over the Apple logo? 😜

Me too. I used to have 25 dual G5 workhorses in my lab. Now I have 25 little underpowered Windows 10 machines that have issues every few weeks as opposed to one a year with the Apple machines. I hate Apple for abandoning the architecture.

PS - I have to buy my own MBP laptop as does every Apple user in the 20,000 person workforce. Because the IT folks say it's sooooo difficult for them to "support." That's in quotes deliberately.

Come work at our local physician-owned hospital. The docs have taken all purchasing authority away from IT. Docs can buy whatever hardware or dodgy software they want and -force- IT to support it. Oh, the crap docs buy at conferences... 🤬
