Why do real physicians with real MDs become homeopaths? It's never made sense to me.

Parallel medical degree in India focusing on "ayurvedic medicine". Apparently there's a huge market for it

That's not entirely accurate. The #AYUSH branches (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Homeopath) courses are officially recognised in India. There's been a policy push to train AYUSH doctors and empower them to prescribe modern medicine to overcome healthcare professional shortage.

Further, I've never personally (or on social media) heard of an 'MD' (or MBBS, in India) officially going ahead to become a homeopath, but I have heard some of them prescribe 'natural'/ayurvedic OTC products.Apparently one MBBS doctors was pulled up for the ironic misdemeanor....

Was talking specifically about ayurvedic which is still regarded by many as not scientific

Neither is homeopathy, right? But 'casual prescribing' of these products is likely commoner than is documented. But modern medicine practice is still an attractive proposition, and provides better earning potential. So unlikely that people are changing sides in droves. IMO.

No body said they were. Just that ayurvedic stuff has a strong demand in India

Oh sorry. I thought that this was in line with @gorskon wondering why MDs move into homeopathy. Apologies. And yeah, the argument that Ayurved is natural, 'chemical' and side effect free (+impact of growth of certain brands) has catapulted the demand for such products.

I'm frankly amazed by its popularity - amongst my relatives in India

Some of the worst homeopath quacks I've ever seen are in India. For example, Prasanta Banerji claims to be able to cure cancer with homeopathy!

Sorry to say that I'm all too well aware of the scourge of P. Banerji & his legions of trainees, students, & underlings, with dubious qualifications, who ply their trade in my city. I'm still willing to give the benefit of doubt to Ayurved, but with homeopath I've zero patience!

And what continues to amaze me is how, down the decades, such medical charlatanry has hoodwinked educated people, with no backlash. If anything, their trade has received legitimacy and veneration.
