Thanks for the kind words, Patrick. I tried really hard to get the profession to walk away from magic water and conspiracy theory, but I feel like the momentum is going the other direction.

honest question: why not become an MD? magic water and other quackery are at the core of naturopathy, not the fringes. i guess i’m not sure how you can reconcile that or even what you’re trying to save and i’d like to understand.

Fair question. Because I'm 50, the parent of a medically fragile kid, and already in an ocean of debt. And, I originally rebelled against that system for a reason that has only worsened over time. A lot of my MD colleagues seem unhappy with their workloads and administrators.

Fact is, I like what I do. I try to function as a mid-level provider working to community standards of care with a very relaxed and thorough visit model. My scope allows me to do that, and I have worked hard to fill in the knowledge gaps my training left.

You were one of the two I was referencing in my responses to @gorskon. I didn’t want to call out you or the other bc I didn’t know what the unintended consequences from lurkers might be. It’s still twitter and twitter is still a cesspool.

That's kind of you, and it is a cesspool for sure. I hear the critics loud and clear, but I wish these conversations had more nuance. I'm sure there are things I do in my clinic that some MDs wouldn't like, but I also get referrals from the local hospital system.

Here is why I think it’s important & valuable to have NDs actually practicing ev-based medicine: some families will ONLY go to an ND. Wishing they wouldn’t won’t change that. I’d rather we have SOME good NDs available to them than them not go to anyone at all or to typical ND.

NDs must stop dubious treatments & get true clinical training. Now, NDs learn quackery by NDs and purported "real medicine" by NDs. They have no effective clinical training on par w/ science-based providers. NDs who say they do EMB are self-taught, meaning they are dangerous.

Imagine if your MD was self-taught... This is frightening stuff.

So many pro-vax, pro-science, pro-EBM, etc see world in B&W. We live in the gray, & I occupy the gray. I focus on nuance, human behavior/psych/sociology. I work w what exists instead of what I wish existed. THAT is how you make change while doing the best you can w what is there.

You might be surprised to know that I can work in the gray. For example, I routinely tell patients who inform me that they're using woo that I don't mind as long as they tell me what it is, so that I can make sure it isn't harmful and doesn't interfere with their treatment.
