Can we stop talking about Biel altogether? Don’t tweet. Don’t RT. Don’t give the story oxygen. That’s a certain kind of well-meaning but inadvertent complicity, not unlike journos’ mistakes in overcovering Wakefield in mid 2000s. It’s the Barbra Streisand effect. Just ignore it.

Also, I make no apologies for my post about Biel today. People forget, for instance, just HOW antivax RFK Jr. is and how antivax Biel must be if she's willing to join forces with him.https://respectfulinsolence.com/2019/06/14/jessica-biel-latest-celebrity-antivaxer/ …

Haven’t had time to read this & wasn’t implying criticism of just anything at all written abt her. I’m pretty confident anything you’ve written has no false balance & keeps focus where it needs to be. Like I said, my initial tweets weren’t directed at anyone specific.

Absolutely agree re media stories, which are the biggest prob. And I apologize. I’m not being clear bc of Twitter char limits & my failure to plan out what I was trying to say. A planned thread would have been better.

There are different types of tweets. Ones criticizing media coverage, ones criticizing Biel, ones speaking generally about it, ones simply retweeting media stories with little or no comment, etc

The ones directly criticizing media stories are helpful. The ones criticizing coverage and attention of her are helpful. The ones urging ignoring her are helpful (if not overdone).

But because of the composition of my followed accounts, I’m seeing an aggregate of these various kinds of tweets, and I see a lot that are NOT helpful.

Just tweeting about what she’s said to knock it down/debunk isn’t necessarily helpful bc it risks increasing her prominence & influence. The ones just RTing media stories — again and again — aren’t helpful. Again, Barbra Streisand-ish. (Not quite the same phenomenon but similar)

Blogging about or tweeting about RFK jr? ABSOLUTELY helpful and important. He already has huge clout by name, history, profession, etc, and nothing can raise his prominence more, so knocking him down every chance possible & reminding ppl he’s a crank can’t be done enough.

Thanks for the clarification

There’s a lot of nuance in what I’m trying to explain, and it’s based on nuance discovered in communication research. The same tweet that can be helpful could have two words changed and become counterproductive—even if both are pro-vax.

Good pts. Can you post a link about this in general, so ppl can see how they can do it better wrt to wording for future--i.e. not simply for this story?
