I admire his enthusiasm, but "drowning out" quackery and medical misinformation with good information just doesn't work. wish him luck, but I wish he'd also talk to those of us who've been at just this thing for many years, like @MarkHoofnagle and others.https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/31/doctor-recruiting-doctors-to-fight-fake-health-info-on-social-media.html …

Professional trolls do thousands of posts, others don't have the resources to do that. This can help balance that. So, this may not be a bad move. Otherwise misinformation sources end up the majority of voices & that gives the illusion more people are on side with misinformation.

It just doesn't work that way. Because the medical authority is already the majority and the authoritative voice. In asymmetric warfare you don't win or lose because your more powerful. These techniques are designed to be effective against the majority voice.

People don't want facts crammed down their throats. Education in the form of discussion & listening gets you further with people. Consider that many patients flock to alt med because they want to be partners in their care & dislike authoritarian approaches to medicine.

Agreed. That's why the "drowning" strategies or "more information" approaches have been shown, in the literature, to not work. You used authoritarian and medicine in the same sentence though, so I basically don't trust anything you say anymore. One of those little red flags.

Yep. "Paternalistic" is not unreasonable, because the medical profession has been historically paternalistic, and there is definitely residual paternalism present. "Authoritarian" is a red flag, though.

Paternalistic then. We're actually on the same side as I do outreach. But I think there is room for Dr. Chiang's approach as it looks like his intent is on the same side too.

And I am in the most paternalistic of all fields. But even so, I value, and fight for autonomy as a core value of professionalism. The idea we are authoritarian is usually just a way of complaining we have standards of evidence.
