I admire his enthusiasm, but "drowning out" quackery and medical misinformation with good information just doesn't work. wish him luck, but I wish he'd also talk to those of us who've been at just this thing for many years, like @MarkHoofnagle and others.https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/31/doctor-recruiting-doctors-to-fight-fake-health-info-on-social-media.html …

This. Really the best thing we can hope for is to stop someone from getting into woo, once they're in it's hard to get them out. Drowning them out can't work because making shit up is not part of my writing process and I imagine that holds true for actual experts.

We frequently assume the the answer to bad information is good information, in greater quantity than the bad information, but we've known for some time that this is not how human minds work. Dr. Chiang appears to have fallen into this trap.

Aside from this, there just aren't enough doctors and scientists who are interested enough in and good enough at social media to execute this strategy, at least not compared to the armies of cranks, trolls, and bots spreading the misinformation.

we doctors just can't let the forces of darkness win this neverending fight... some things have to be done. at a governmental scale for instance in France we might be on the edge of stopping the reimbursment of homeopathy.

I didn't say do nothing. What I did say is that trying to drown out the misinformation with good information is a strategy doomed to fail. Dr. Chiang is using the "knowledge deficit" model of combating pseudoscience, which is incomplete ad largely wrong.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/jama-on-medical-misinformation/ …

Sounds like a good opportunity to collaborate. When we as physicians band together we will see greater impacts.

It’s definitely a subtype of crank. The contrarian troll.
