Who said anything about *moral authority*? The person to whom I responded made a definitive statement about the MEDICAL indications for abortion. That made me curious if he had any medical training that would lead me to take his pronouncement seriously. Surprise! He didn't.https://twitter.com/yurilev77/status/1135139047280713729 …

Gorskon, so you’re essentially saying that only an MD has the moral authority to make a judgement call here? MDs are human and often have intellectual limitations beyond their areas of specialty. If this is an indication of your bedside manner then I pity your patients.

It's no different from when I encounter, for example, antivaxers making medical claims about vaccines, child development, infectious disease, etc. My first move is to ask their source of expertise, and then I ask for evidence from the peer-reviewed medical literature.

My BS detector goes off when I see "peer reviewed."

It’s laughable to be in a science discussion and wary of peer review. It’s literally how we weed out bullsh*t from good science.

Indeed it is. It's imperfect and a lot of crap still gets through, but it's the least bad system we currently have for weeding out bullshit.
