Not exactly. Some DCIS lesions ARE a precursor to cancer and some are not (or are a precursor that will take so long to progress to cancer that it won't trouble the woman in her lifetime). Some DCIS lessons WILL progress to invasive cancer if left untreated. Some will not. The current risk factors used to predict progression (grade, comedo necrosis, etc.) are very unreliable. What we need are better biomarkers for aggressiveness versus indolence.
