This is not OK. Even during my brief (compared to these patients) experience of chronic pain, I got a negative vibe at the pharmacy when filling prescriptions. Thankfully, surgery took care of the pinched nerve that was so painful, but what if it hadn't? https://www.wired.com/story/the-true-victims-of-the-opioid-crisis-are-starting-to-rebel/ …

What if the surgery hadn't worked? What if I had a condition like one of these patients that would plague me with chronic pain for the rest of my life?

When my back injury was at its worst, I couldn't get on an airplane or sit through a multi-hour meeting without at least 2 Tramadol in my system: opioids allowed me to keep doing my job.

I couldn't take opiates at work because I couldn't see patients or operate while taking them. When the pain got so bad that I had to stop seeing patients and operating, with no signs of improvement in sight, that was when I knew I needed surgery.
