Yep. Medical school and residency train you to take care of patients. It's a complex skill set based on science, but it's not science. It's also not really about critical thinking outside the parameters of known medical science. I think that's why docs are susceptible to woo.https://twitter.com/terrysimpson/status/1131244576809803776 …

I am a proud alum of @UChiPritzker critical thinking and skepticism came more from my grad school days @UChicago in the lab - I don't think med schools or residencies are set up for such

I came to realize the difference when I entered my PhD program after medical school and two years of residency, although I also got it when I noticed that my medical school biochemistry close was less rigorous than the 1st year grad school class I took as an undergraduate.

So much of medical school is memorization. If I could redesign it, the first 6 months would be only Spanish and statistics/trial design/how to analyze evidence.

It amazes me how easily well-known educated people can be oblivious to poor trial design/stats/p-hacking/multi variable analysis/small sample size/relative vs absolute change/etc.

You’re right about what is taught, but some of the best doctors do think outside the box and can apply principles not necessarily learned in med school and residency to improve care of patients.

In med school we spend a lot of our time worrying about board exams that ultimately hold the most weight in deciding our residency prospects. Somewhere along the line we approach it as job training and forget that ultimately a physician is a scientist

We are all susceptible. Even with the best training, we don't always think critically.

Well, it’s certain,y not taught in nursing school, nursing clinical, nor fellowships either. In my NP program, I had profs who promoted reiki, acupuncture, and herbal remedies. If I had been a few years younger, I probably would not have questioned any of it. 😩

The obvious conclusion from what u say about med school not being about critical thinking outside parameters of "known medical science" is surely that most docs are chained to the narrow inmutable known in med school. A life long predilection for the imbibing of Kool Aid ensues.
