Season six was, actually, quite good, by and large. Of course, George R.R. Martin has written significant chunks of the sixth novel; so maybe the showrunners had access to that. It was season seven where the storytelling got really rushed.

On the other hand, there were signs of decline. Ramsay Bolton, for instance, became even more of a cartoonish villain. Characters started doing more stupid things that appeared necessary to drive the plot more than consistent with their characters.
