On the other hand, there were signs of decline. Ramsay Bolton, for instance, became even more of a cartoonish villain. Characters started doing more stupid things that appeared necessary to drive the plot more than consistent with their characters.

I'll give you that partially but add that NOTHING in season six was as bad as the Dorne storyline in season five. Jaime and Bronn's excellent adventure in Dorne was truly cringe-inducing.
