They also seem to ignore the difference between social media commentary and what we say to patients in the privacy of the exam room. Does anyone think that I actually rant and berate breast cancer patients who went to the naturopath before coming to me with advanced tumors? 1/https://twitter.com/drg1985/status/1128669239504703489 …

Does anyone think I berate the quacks when discussing treatment options with a patient in the exam room? I rarely even use the word quackery when speaking one-on-one with patients. Usually I say things like "unproven" or "doesn't work"n as empathetically as I can. 2/

It irritates the hell out of me when critics attack me, suggesting that I shouldn't be forthright and blunt on social media because it's criticizing patients. 3/3

Replying to @gorskon @EdzardErnst
This ignores the other side where patients get chemotherapy are berated for ‘poisoning’ their body and then - when the cancer spreads anyway - for not choosing woo. Yes, that’s what happened to my friend who died of breast CA. I thank you for speaking out

I know that. Sadly, I've heard so many stories of this very phenomenon from patients and their families.
