But how to weed people like Wakefield out? The UK already took away his license to practice—and appropriately so. He's already professionally disgraced because of the retraction of his Lancet paper and Brian Deer's reporting about his scientific fraud. 1/https://twitter.com/usnehal/status/1128020264154013696 …

As for weeding someone like him out earlier, I'm not sure how one would do that. Early on, Wakefield was ambitious, but not obviously corrupt. Even his Lancet case series wasn't obviously fraudulent before Deer investigated and found the fraud. 3/

It was thanks to Brian Deer that all these revelations (e.g., the infamous birthday party blood draws) see the light of day. 4/

In any event, professionally, Wakefield is a nobody, a force spent long ago. Unfortunately, there's no way to stop him from being an effective antivaccine propagandist of the "martyred" variety. 5/

Far more worrisome to me now are pediatricians like Dr. Larry Palevsky, who's an actual practicing doctor spreading antivaccine propaganda. Other examples include Dr. Bob Sears and Dr. Paul Thompson. 6/

State medical boards won't sanction them. Medical professional societies won't kick them out. They use their MDs and memberships to give the appearance of legitimacy to their antivax quackery and pseudoscience. 7/

Wakefield is old news. He was long ago expelled from the ranks of practicing physicians. There are so many more antivax doctors who are endangering children NOW by their actual practice who need to have their medical licenses taken away and professional affiliations stripped. 8/8
