In reiki, a reiki master channels "healing energy" from something called the "universal source" or "universal life energy" (or a similar term) to the person being healed, to allegedly therapeutic effect. Sound familiar? 2/

OK, now substitute the word "God" or "Jesus" for "universal source." What do you have? Faith healing! The laying on of hands, just with a different divine source of healing than the Judeo-Christian god. 3/

Of course, reiki adds all sorts of other mystical nonsense, such as distance healing and sending "healing energy" forward and backward in time, but at its core it's just faith healing. 4/

Reiki isn't ancient either. It was invented in the 1920s. 5/

Also, to make the connection to faith healing more explicit, tha man who invented reiki, Mikao Usui, said that he wanted to find out how Jesus healed. 6/

Usui is even said to have disappeared up a mountain for several weeks to meditate, and when he came down he claimed to be able to heal. Sounds a lot like Jesus before the start of his ministry, doesn’t it? 7/

What's really sad is how many respectable academic medical centers have embraced this mysticism. 8/

For instance, get a load of this "fact sheet" on reiki from
@ClevelandClinic. 9/ https://my.clevelandclinic.org/ccf/media/files/Wellness/reiki-factsheet.pdf …Show this thread -
Quoth
@ClevelandClinic: "How does Reiki work? The reiki practitioner is the conduit between the patient and the source of the universal life force energy; the energy flows through the practitioner’s energy field and through her hands to the patient."

The
@ClevelandClinic reassures us, though: "The energy does not come from the practitioner; rather it comes through the practitioner from the universal source. there is no energy drain on the practitioner."

Imagine my relief that there's no energy drain on the practitioner! So reiki is not like the alien healing machine from
#Babylon5. Whew! 12/https://babylon5.fandom.com/wiki/Energy_Transfer_Device …Show this thread -
According to
@ClevelandClinic, reiki may do the following: • bring about a peaceful, deep state of relaxation • dissolve energy blockages and tension • detoxify the body. 13/Show this thread -
And: • support the well-being of a person receiving traditional medical treatments that are debilitating (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, kidney dialysis) • supply universal life force energy to the body • stimulate the body’s immune system • help to relieve pain. 14/

And: • stimulate tissue and bone healing after injury or surgery • increase the vibrational frequency on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. 15/

I love that last bit.
@ClevelandClinic, WTF does "increase the vibrational frequency on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels" even MEAN? Seriously, what does this mean? 16/Show this thread -
To see academic institutions like
@ClevelandClinic embrace mystical woo like reiki continues to profoundly depress me. 17/17Show this thread -
Oh, one other thing. I've downloaded the PDF of that pamphlet. So if
@ClevelandClinic takes it down, I still have the evidence. 17a/17Show this thread
