100 hours was average. It was frequently more than that.

I was pretty lucky to train with residency hour restrictions. Hardly violated except during Gyn/Onc (didn’t complain learned the most on that rotation). I still fell asleep driving home once (pulled over right after and napped).

Yep. I remember waking up to honking cars when I fell asleep at a light and at least one where I ran off the side of the road.

Gotta wonder about the level of care a doc can provide after 4+ days without sleep.

Is there a reason for the long hours? Or is just the culture hospitals have developed. Thats rough to see what they do for Drs to get their education
-
Supposedly it’s because we need to work as much as possible for learning. But there are plenty of models and programs (like mine) where doctors get trained just fine which don’t require these absurd hours. Largely it’s cultural inertia. “We took our lumps so you will too.”

I remember around the time that the (supposed) limitations of resident work hours was being debated. A resident was arguing with an old-school doc on a radio show, and pointed out to the listeners that they were discussing limiting to “only” 80 hour work weeks!
-
Found it. Diane Rehm from 2002. Dr. Ruth Potee made an eloquent argument for the limitation. The meat of her argument is at the 18:30 mark: https://dianerehm.org/audio/#/shows/2002-06-17/medical-residents-hours/103248/@18:30 … but the whole interview is interesting from a historical perspective.

42 hours was the record for how long I stayed up on call during my second year in surgery residence. I cannot believe I didn’t die on the way home - motivator? I didn’t want the people covering the ER to take care of me if I was a trauma, no “finger and a foley” for this girl
-
My record was hard to say. I was on the transplant service, which involved being on call 24/7 from home, but due to a shortage of PGY-4s and -5s, they made us take general surgery call every third night too.
