The right have been opposing science for a long time in the US - evolution, climate change - so it's an easy move to make, and related to populism.

It IS populist right wing politics. Over the last decade antivaxers have been VERY successful framing vaccine mandates as an assault on freedom and parental rights. That's been the gateway for antivaccine pseudoscience to enter the @GOP, and antivaxers have used that opening.
